Director of Children’s and Youth Ministry

Who We Are:  We have been in our present location for over 300 years and welcomes new families regularly. Beyond our open doors, traditions, missions and location, JIPC loves Jesus Christ. We strive to be a safe place for our children and youth to learn about the love Jesus has for us and the world beyond JIPC.  In doing so we try to be a church that is open to the Holy Spirit at work as we walk alongside our children/youth and grow in our faith together while always trying to remember we are claimed and loved by God.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Personal commitment to Jesus Christ; a strong, passionate relationship with God and calling to the position at JIPC.
  • Working knowledge of the Bible.
  • Proficiency with computers and desktop publishing; familiarity with electronic communications of various forms.
  • Bachelor’s Degree or comparable experience serving the church.
  • Experience working with Youth and Children

JOB SUMMARY:

The Director of Children’s and Youth Ministry will report to the Senior Pastor/Head of Staff and coordinate ministries for children and youth alongside the Children and Youth Discipleship Committee (C&YDC) at James Island Presbyterian Church (JIPC). The Director with the C&YDC will plan ministries for children and youth throughout the year; equip Sunday School teachers for ministry, and monitor children and youth participation among the members of JIPC. He or she will lead events and programs, initiate contact with members of the church about children and youth events, reach out to potential members, and work with fellow church leaders on long-range planning and program development.

RESPONSIBILITIES/FUNCTIONS:

  • Oversee Sunday School for Youth & Children
  • Help to recruit, equip, train, and retain Sunday School teachers, Chaperones, and Youth Leaders
  • Communicate with all volunteer leaders regarding needs for curriculum and supplies; monitor attendance and participation
  • Plan and coordinate youth and children’s events, milestone ministries, mission trips, and retreats with committee
  • Supervise and attend these events; help with and/or coordinate set-up, serving, and cleaning up as needed
  • Plan regular activities for children and youth and their families from birth until the completion of high school.
  • Foster positive relationships with Youth/children outside of church.
  • Alongside the Clerk of Session, implement guidelines outlined within the Child Protection Policy of JIPC, with the understanding that oversight of this policy is the responsibility of the Director of C&Y Ministry
  • During church events, make a special effort to reach out to welcome children and families
  • Work with staff and other leaders to coordinate programming to present a unified message/vision to the congregation based on the seasons of the church
  • Keep regular office hours along with time spent outside the office engaged in ministry with the congregation and community. This is done with the understanding that the position is a very flexible position with many hours spent away from the office and at irregular times of the day and night.
